What is anaerobic respiration? Firstly, to those who know their biology, congratulations! I'm sure you do know about the definition of anaerobic respiration and how it is done right? If not, no worries, there's always room for more knowledge in the ever-so-empty brain of yours. besides, according to researchers, only _% of the brain's capacity is used. It isn't even over the 10% mark I think. Though, I am not too sure about the correct and exact value of the percentage. But, never mind, some day, I'll find out. But for now, A-N-A-E-R-O-B-I-C R-E-S-P-I-R-A-T-I-O-N!!!
For those who have still no idea what is anaerobic respiration, let's just start with the word, respiration first. What is respiration? Respiration is the transport of oxygen from the clean air to the tissue cells and the transport of carbon dioxide in the opposite direction. And to be more specific, oxygen gas is brought to cell level for cellular respiration. What is that all about again? Well, cellular respiration is simply the metabolic reactions and processes that take place in a cell or across the cell membrane to get biochemical energy from fuel molecules and then release of the cells' waste products. Energy can be released by the oxidation of multiple fuel molecules and is stored as "high-energy" carriers. The energy formed is roughly 38 ATP molecules.
Well, in short, it's simply the process in which energy is generated from the body. Cellular respiration, though, is divided into two types - aerobic and anaerobic respiration. Aerobic respiration is a process in which cellular respiration occurs when there is a huge supply of oxygen. Not to say huge, but enough for it to happen. This is our normal way of respiration when mainly at rest. As I said, most of the time.
On the other hand, we now enter our main topic. Anaerobic respiration, this is a process that occurs when the oxygen uptake is insufficient to be used for aerobic respiration. In normal English, it means that there is not enough oxygen in the body, hence, aerobic respiration cannot be done. So, another type of respiration is needed to supply energy to the body. Though, since this is not the usual means of respiration, the energy made is a lot less than normal aerobic respiration, which provides 38 ATP molecules. This one only provides the body with 2 ATP molecules.
When does this happen? The bigger question is, when does the oxygen uptake of the body become insufficient? Simple. When we do heavy exercises, we tend to use up a lot of oxygen for aerobic respiration. At this stage, the oxygen is quickly used up to produce a mass of energy so that enough energy is used for the specific activities. Hence, the oxygen shortage. So, anaerobic respiration is required to give that extra bit of energy to the body.
To describe this process, it can be differentiated into both plant and animal anaerobic respirations. In the plant's case, the glucose is converted into ethanol while constantly regenerating the NAD+ ions from the NADH accumulated due to the inability of the electron transfer chain to continue in aerobic respiration because of the shortage of oxygen. Hence, a huge sum of alcohol is formed in the plant. Though, plants have a way to burn off the alcohol, so no side effects are formed from this, other than the lower amount of energy provided, that is.
Next, we go to an animal's way of undergoing anaerobic respiration. It is the same as that of a plant. But this time, lactic acid or lactate is formed instead of alcohol. Don't ask why, but it's the NATURE as my chemical lecturer calls it for the electrolytes, but same applies in here. Lactic acid, however, is poisonous to the body cells of mainly higher mammals, like humans. As all acids are, lactic acid also shows the properties of acids and the damage that they can deal to all humans. For example, an acid's corrosiveness is one of its main destroying powers. Hence, we humans are unable to perform anaerobic respiration continuously for a long period of time. This is because lactic acid would build up or accumulate in our body, causing the poisonous characteristic of lactic acid to damage the body cells. If prolonged exposure to this occurs, the body might either one, be slowly reduced of body cell count, or have a huge lack of energy due to the low amount of energy produced when a lot of energy is needed. Hence, oxygen is needed to further oxidize the lactate and this amount of extra intake is called the oxygen debt.
This is why we feel the pain after running 500 metres of Chung Ling's track on the field. The leg's pain comes from the lactic acid accumulating in our leg, more specifically the muscle area, causing some pain on the area. That is why we need to breathe in all the oxygen after undergoing strenuous exercise. But that is not why we are here today! Now, if there are so many disadvantages of anaerobic respiration, why would I say it helps the world?
Ok, this can be explained with one simple reason. If anyone reads organic chemistry, I am sure this topic shall be touched sooner or later as it is one of the basics of organic chemistry.
We have ethanol after yeast fermentation, otherwise known as anaerobic respiration of plants. In animals, lactic acid is formed. With this, we can make a scenario like this :
One day, when a certain someone has terrible body odour and is just finished with sports, how do we solve this? Well, as most things in this world are solved indirectly, one way or another. We first take a couple of plant or yeast molecules. Then, we shall inject it into the muscle cells of the living human! What would it do? Haha, I'm sure you all realise that there is now a mixture of lactic acid and ethanol as anaerobic respiration occurs! Hence, with this equation, we shall create a mixture that no one has ever done! Observe,
Presto! Woah! We have ester! A very suitable odour-be-gone secret as the fruity smell will guarantee a mesmerizing smell of perfume in the body, erasing every bad smell there is! And what's more? No more problems from lactic acid! It's a 'buy-1-free-1' scenario, right? Plus, more water in the body for further consumption! Though..... I don't know about the side effects of this. We'll leave the scientists for this part. But till then, we shall see! Off with today's nutty and maniacal discovery! Glittery..... shiny..... sparkling..... precious..... romantic..... seductive..... magnificent..... luxurious..... elegant..... glamorous..... fabulous..... expensive?..... Anyhow, diamonds will always be the immovable object in everyone's mind, especially when it comes to jewelery. When it comes to diamonds, there is no other replacement for this gift from Mother Nature.
What is a diamond? Well, for all you people who do not happen to know its origin, diamonds are actually made up of.... carbon. Yep, you've guessed it. That black rough thing you use for fire? Charcoal? That kind of carbon. It's amazing how carbon can be turn into such fine art of nature. Unpredictable? Impressive? Unbelievable? Yes. These three words show how amazing nature can be. Such wonderful miracles exist on Earth. To begin with graphite is another story, as it is also another type of carbon. But diamond? How could it be, you ask!
Diamond as you know, would be formed under high pressure and of course, low temperature, although the range of the temperature could be around 900 degrees or higher, but it is still low compared to the core of the Earth, of course. Under these conditions, carbon would be compressed to form the wonderful shiny object we call, Diamond. An allotrope of carbon, diamond is known as the toughest object or element ever to be found on Earth, with a hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale, signifying and cementing its place as the hardest among all solids on this very planet. Amazing stuff as you can see.
The best part of it is that, diamonds have become popular soon after its discovery. It has been mainly used as jewelery, being one of the most priced mineral to be used in this particular industry. Sure we have ruby, sapphire, emerald, topaz, opal or amethyst. But still, nothing compares to the shining spark of all minerals - Diamond. The amazing part of this is that it can be only cut by a diamond blade made out of diamond itself. That's the best part of it. It so proves how hard and tough the structure of diamond is, being unbreakable and totally resistant to any damage due to dropping, minor cuts or scratching. This has become a plus point for jewelery buyers, who sometimes are a little bit reckless in their own ways. *does not want to go further*
The popularity of diamond still continues to increase. What's more? The name itself has also become a big word. What do I mean by big word? It means that a slight mention about it creates sparks and excitement in people's minds. This has become an extremely good marketing item to be used in several other ways, like shows.
Ever heard of "Diamonds are Forever"? I'm sure you have. Some might recognize it as a song from the oldies, being one of the biggest hits of its time prior to its release. Most others would recognize it as the title of the book entitled, "Diamonds Are Forever", part of Ian Fleming's famous series, "James Bond". Soon after, it was made into a show, and received a lot of hype, as well as being rated as one of the best shows.
It was not only in this series that diamonds have become the central object of attention. In several other media, diamonds have also been related to a glamorous, fabulous and luxurious lifestyle, featuring in advertisements, music videos, movies and books. It is often regarded as a high-class object among high-class people, to which I believe is not true, however. But with this, we can prove how valuable diamonds are as well as how great an impact it has given us since its discovery.
What's more? Now, objects are even embedded with diamond. Believe it or not. Some appliances are even made of them! For example, this watch below is a diamond watch! Wow!

A dream for everyone who does not have the capability to possess a car of that caliber. Well, the following is a Mercedes Benz SL 550 car. Take a good look at it.
Stylish isn't it? I would really want a car like that. Too bad all I can do is glue my face to the car model. But to those who can buy that car, by all means, please do so. But anyway, back to the topic. What does this car have got to do with.... diamonds? One's a stone, the other's a whole bunch of stones..... metals, that is. But nevertheless, what is the relation? Time has taken us into a journey in which, many of us would go through. From the series of events occurring in the space of time, whether past, present or future, it has made the world what it is and what it will be in the many days to come. Time has taken us down the road of evolution, growth and maturity. Why so? Since the age of the dinosaurs, the world has changed. Evolution has taken place, turning the world to what it is now. Life forms change from one form to another. Land area changes every now and then. The weather has changed. The seas have changed. The environment has changed. The ecosystem has changed. The entire galaxy has changed! The entire universe and cosmos has changed!
The earth has become matured. If not, it is now slowly making its way up to its peak. Either way, maturity would be achieved some day, some time. But who knows? Maybe the world would not mature. Maybe, it is still in a premature state, waiting for its chance to blossom and shine in the galaxy it lives in. The Earth is like a living being, with unexpected possibilities all over. People might say it isn't, but why not?
"The Earth is dying" If it isn't alive, why would it die?
Whatever it is, this constant change and transformation of this world we live in has created changes. Changes in which they were instrumental in the world's biggest events or even to the most unknown happenings in man's history. Change has led to everything in this world. To explain it in detail, it is actually a series of chain reactions, resulting in everything that has happened. One thing affects another in one way or another, directly or indirectly, now or in the many centuries to come. Just like how the fall of the Roman Empire led to the start of several miniature ones, which slowly form the nations around the world today. Who knows what else might change in the coming days of this world!
In this world of full of surprises and marvelous beings, it is no surprise that those who inhabit this world have their own piece of sparkling rock in them as well. Well, maybe not exactly a rock, but just, a mere engine in them. It is amazing how this little object runs the whole body. Amazing how this little object, contributes to the life and death of the body it lives in. It shows us how amazing and special everything is. Even if you are as small as an ant or even smaller than a proton, you'd still contribute a lot to this very world. It makes us feel that although you are small, you still can do something. Size does not matter, remember?
How did life start? We all know how Earth was formed by a ball of dust and all those smaller molecules, hence slowly growing into a large mass. All things start from small, just like the Earth. Like how life of any being, would start as a baby, a cub, a young plant or a hatchling. Earth was also formed from objects several billion times smaller than the size of what it is. You see how fascinating it is? Nothing can work without something. It is simply a chain reaction of events that happen in the world. Size does not matter, once again. Everything has its purpose.
Hence, after all that, life begins on this world. A new era has begun. It all started in the prehistoric days, known to be many millions and billions of years ago. We can start it off from the age of microscopic animals, to dinosaurs, to prehistoric animals, and then, from evolution, we have men. You see? Life is a series of chain events. Evolution has brought it forward, constantly changing, adapting to the environment around it, creating a better place. Slowly.... and with great effect! It was through the long sequence of growth and evolution that man was even introduced into these vast grounds, known as the plant Earth. From there, life has turned through history and created what it is today.
Humans are wonderful beings. The Earth, a larger being, is even more wonderful. It was not until the days in which I went to Yosemite that I discovered how miraculous and humongous the world can be. Earth is larger than us any time. But all we see in it, is merely a globe. We don't really have to chance to see how big this place is. And like I said, before Yosemite, it was a whole blank page for me. After Yosemite, my whole concept for the world has changed!
To be frank, I think some of you readers do not know where or what is Yosemite. Some of you might even get the wrong perception of Yosemite. Well, does the name remind you of Yosemite Sam? I bet it does! It's that small cartoon character featured in Bugs Bunny. Still no idea? Maybe this picture ought to give you one...
Got it? Haha, but still, what does that name have anything to do with a place? For sure, Looney Tunes is in America. Where is WB Productions? America.... Think further.... Hollywood, Los Angeles! It was here in California that WB Productions is situated. It was here in California that Yosemite is situated. To be frank, Yosemite, is an area full of wonderful sights. It brings nature closer to your doorstep, as if it was the closest you've ever been to it. Yosemite National Park of California, is how I ended up in all this. It was on the way to the lake of Tahoe that I passed this place. A wonderful place to be in I say. But what's so terrific and amazing about it? Why am I making all the fuss about it?
Well, you never know till you go there. In the centre of Yosemite National Park, there are several giant mountains, and I do mean giants. Not an average hill like in Penang. No, they were 10 Mount Kinabalus. As in, the size of each. A big pyramidal structure of earthen objects and trees, as well as snow, contribute to each and every giant mountain in the area. And the best part was, there was a road up into the mountains, to go to Tahoe, that is. I shall relate it as a large behemoth, each resembling a giant earth monster. As I went deeper into the mountainous area, I discovered that the road just got smaller and smaller. The mountains on the other hand, got bigger, and more gigantic than any I have ever seen. A great experience that is! Up on the peak of Yosemite, I looked around the mountain. Around it, several others stood tall and mighty, showing off their grace and wonder. From then on, I felt like a small bacterium, within these large walls of nature. It felt, as if nature had shown how superior it was and how great it will ever be in the next phases of life. A wonderful, breathtaking sight it was. As I looked around once more, it was as if life had never been this breathtaking. The world circled around me, reassuring what a life it was, and how lucky we were to roam these lands, harnessing its wonders and making sure that the Earth stays the most wonderful place in the universe. That was all that was on my mind. And without a doubt, it shall be on my mind for a long, long time.
Life is brilliant. Life is pure. Life is beautiful. Life is fascinating. Life is awesome. Life is everything! It contains every aspect that you can think of. And the thing is, you are living it. Hence, here, I shall end my first topic. Remember, life is the most wonderful miracle that has ever happened!
