Destined For Diabetes : Part Uno

Diabetes... incurable? Oh god... It seems that on this day, April 28th, there are now 6 more hungry people in the world bound for diabetes. What's more? Probably the worst of them all is going to be me. Yes, sadly... I am proud to announce that I am officially part of the 'DFD' club! T_T

DFD Part Uno - April 28
Shandagoras?
The air filled with the scent of sugar. Even the very olfactory buds of my very nasal cavity could sense the change in its concentration, multiplying by multiples you can't even imagine every nanosecond of the day. Reminds me of Flo-Rida's sugar.... Sigh....

Today, the DFD were on a mission. For.......

Object 1 of disaster, THE NIKE SHOES. At 11.30 a.m. GMT +8 time, a certain chilled brandy headed out to the Bay of the Queen in search of the first ingredient of this epic, disastrous cauldron of doom. Despite all the hustle and rush for time, it seemed that time was irrelevant. After scouring the various stalls and stands, it finally came down to a certain JUSCO where the ingredient would be perfect for its value, for the brandy, that is. Smartly, Math came into the board game and off he went with his formulas and theorems, as seen below :

Every 100 dollars, 20 dollar rebate.
Nike Shoe A : 209 dollars 0 cents.
Adidas Shoe B : 199 dollars 0 cents.

Figure out that mystery question and you shall win the answer of the first ingredient to the magical DFD cauldron!

Why did it have something to do with the DFD cauldron? I mean, shoes and cauldron? What the heck is the relation of those two? Surely you don't want to drink a magical potion made of rubber! Ah! But this was to lead to the next event!

The Broken Shandy and the Gold of "Unbrokenness"!
Short and simple. The now broken brandy has now a new pair of shoes. To what? To have an excuse to withdraw his dedicated payroll earned from the scroll center that has borders everywhere around its stall. Still untouched, it laid beautifully on the safety vault in the storage. However, everything comes to an end. At the end, the broken brandy had no choice but to withdraw his gold of "unbrokenness" in order to join the journey of those who are destined for DIABETES!

Tribal Council and the Big Red Monster?!
Sadly, it wasn't a case of elimination at tribal council. More of a meeting of some sort. But as the chosen ones got to the venue, gallons of water started pouring onto the ground beneath their very vehicles. It was almost certain that they were destined to not approach the "Laksa Of Longkang" (LOL) to start the journey towards their destiny. Instead, fate has led them towards the secret of Rat Island. After minutes of travelling, they have finally reached their destiny!!!!!!!

Behold! The Big Red Noodles! *otherwise known as Mee Goreng*

These tasty noodles are made of well, flour which contributes to over 60 percent of the above dish! This Indian delicacy, consisting of none other than beancurd, potatoes, veges and the ever so secret ingredient, SQUID!, became the catalyst in an effort to quench their thirst for food. Simply unforgettable. A renowned marvel in its territory. A little spicy but not too much. Thankfully, no wasabi added as we already have enough greens in the form of vegetables!Just right for hungry hearts like these men. You can see it from the picture! Ain't those noodles look big, red and tasty?! Judge by yourself. For that, it rates 7 point 3 on the rate-o-meter!

The Legend of the Green Worms
Next on their quest, is the legend of the green invertebrates! These worms thrive in icy conditions, preferably in milk and brown sugar, while enjoying the red beans growing all around it. Don't believe me? OBSERVE!

*Chendol*

As described, these green objects, also known as Grass Jelly, together with red beans in a bowl of brown sugary and milky cauldron to form what we known as Chendol in the picture shown above. Ah, even Collins of India has labelled it as the most satisfying legendary food that the tale of the Pearl of the Orient has to offer. It has a sweet taste which is the perfect dessert after a heavy meal. The combination of brown sugar, coconut milk and red bean enhances its sweetness, giving a very delightful taste for consumers. Aside from that, seeing as the rain had fled from the sky, a chill from the shaved ice is the way to lighten the effects of the blaze of the Sun. Simply satisfying. My 6th time this year at the stall. A fair 8.0 out of 10 for it. No questions asked!

Here's a look at the stall just in case any of you gets lost finding it!

Even the P.C.K. family agrees. No questions asked! =D

Coco-Nuts Over Jelly?
Our third stop of this expedition brings us towards Dato' Keramat where the coconut haven is found. Being relatively unknown to all of them, we set out on a journey to discover this new prospect in our chase towards the ultimate dessert. Let's see, behold, COCONUTS!

Well, not exactly coconuts. Coconuts in a fridge I would say. If you look at the picture in great detail, you will notice that these coconuts in a fridge were not mere coconuts. They were.....!!!!

Tadaa! The first jello to emerge out of the husk courtesy of the now unbroken Brandy! I shall name it........ Flubber 2?!

Well, this is exactly what 3 dollars and 70 cents looks like. Coconut with white flesh around it. Boy does this attract a carnivore like me! But what is so special about this coconut which really makes it so expensive? Let's see it once again!

Yeah, you got it. The flubber! Unlike Robin Williams, this was actually made by :

According to Mr Joez the proprietor, these coconut are grown in Perak and are of the pandan species. To form the jelly, the outer husk of the coconut is initially removed and then roasted in the oven. After a cooling period, they are then placed in the cooler room. During this period, jelly will be formed…definitely a new innovation. He assured us that no additive or artificial chemical is added. The jelly is formed through the hot and cold process.
Thanks to What2See : Best of Penang Food (CK Lam) for the information and various other sites who confirmed it as well.

As the tag said "100% asli", it is kind of innovative how Mr. Joez had come across this idea. However, our Collins still believes its powder. Suit himself. Better still, if it's powder, more diabetes for us! :D. But truly this is one of a kind. You rarely see things like this around in this whole wide world. Flubber 2, unlike its ancestor, is a lot softer, less sticky and certainly edible to men. It has a coconut juice taste to it since it was coconut juice after all. Eating it along with its flesh makes it fairly enjoyable. I must say there might be nothing so special about this, but certainly an exposure that proved to be satisfying for people like us who have found out about this for the first time. I shall give it a 6.8 out of 10!

Oh, and what about Coco being nuts? Well, apparently a certain self-proclaimed Admiral/Coco *You know who you are!* went lost 2 times into the unknown depths of Sungai Pinang and came back with another unidentified being instead *no offense :X*. Instead of being grateful to the one who could not finish it *another you know you are*, he went nuts over it and kept refusing to eat it. Sigh. Such a pity. I guess Admirals already have their own Coco "nuts" to savour, hah?
____________________________________________________________________

To recap the story above. Basically, we went to three great places before the people gave up due to full stomachs. I hope it was hugely satisfactory. If any of the above places seriously inhaled profusely for you guys, then sorry. But anyhow, I certainly enjoyed the whole journey and not just the food.

Okay, I'll stop being so formal. Ah, another success in my food discovery! Destined For Diabetes shall continue with more sugar and fat intake as we return next time on Part Dos! Enjoy! :D

And yes, I know this is a corny post >_<, but w/e xP
End

Special Thanks to Jimmy, Collins, James, Sheng and Soony for coming! =D

Food For Thought

Rawr, food fiesta! Who said I was done with roasted pork and board noodles. This Penang Food Expedition is brought to you by J.Y.!

Headlines : The Safe Lane (not food)

Welcome to Lorong Selamat aka Safe Lane, Penang. I, J.Y., am proud to present to you my experience upon entering this lane of dangerlessness......

Okay, enough of the formality. Welcome to Lorong Selamat, Penang, home to some of the most famous food on Penang Island! Yippee!

Day 1 (1st Attempt)
Well, to be honest, it wasn't really the day I really planned for. Actually wanted to try out the famous Char Koay Teow at Lorong Selamat, probably the most expensive and famous one in the entire Penang Island. You got that right! One plate was heard to be at least 6 dollars. Eating gold? Well, maybe platinum. No matter, it was still some expensive stuff. You think? Upon arrival, THE SHOP IS OFFICIALLY CLOSED!

D=

Well, maybe not. Just for Tuesdays. So much for wasting petrol to come. You should really come watch us go clueless while standing and wandering arond the place after we parked. Big letdown. At least, for the returning Jia Rong. Sadly, it was a no show from the Fried Koay Teow shop. I guess they had too much money in their pockets eh?

Ah well.. going on with our story, the 4 of us (Sheng, Soony, JR and I) decided to instead go to the corner shop at Lorong Selamat. Well, for my parents, this is the shop they go to during weekends if we cannot think of anything to eat. What's there? If you've heard of Fried Oyster at Lorong Selamat, this is where we were heading to.

Ah and again, sadly, no Fried Oyster show too..... So what did we have?

Fried Hor Fun! Woots! Well, it actually isn't that bad. It is actually quite famous among Penangites as well. Just ask for Lorong Selamat Sar Hor Fun. I didn't know they were open during the afternoons too. Kind of lucky to actually be able to eat this dish. Well, this was for 3 people as I was starving after my exercise. JR and I shared this plate. It's quite good. Maybe you'd argue it's quite normal. But, well, for a shop which is quite renowned, at least it lives up to its potential. May not have a very unique taste like having some super rare ingredient, but tastes real good. Enjoyed my lunchies! 7.2 outta 10!

Next, we go to ze ShandSoon's food. They apparently had some disgust towards Fried Hor Fun. Probably because the shop was not busy at that time and they thought it was just a regular coffee shop. Haha, just to tell you, this shop is always full during weekends :X. They had the Wan Tan Mee. I didn't quite get their reaction for the noodles. We didn't talk about it. But from my experience, I can tell you that it's quite different from the regular Tok Tok Mee aka Wan Tan Noodles. The main attraction is their Wan Tan, or well, shrimp dumplings. Costs about 50 cents per dumpling if you buy them separately I think. It's a round dumpling and I think, is tastier than normal dumplings. More meat inside I guess, and softer. The noodles itself is quite nice. It's more of a slippery, sticky type. Forgive me about my descriptions. Been a long time since I had this dish. I rate it 7.4 out of 10!

Ah, after that we went to visit New World Park for a little while. Incidently, it was right at the other end of the Safe Lane. Had to walk all the way just to visit Mr. Chong Eng and Collins. Ah well, got to see them. No pictures though, sadly. Incidently, it was my second outing in a day at New World Park. You see, while I was waiting for the slowpokes to arrive *=P*, smartly decided to go enjoy a little appetizer before my lunch...

Behold! The mighty Ice Kacang!!!! Well, maybe you won't call it an appetizer. More like a dessetizer? Ah, suit yourself. Anyway, I had mine with less sweetness. What do I mean? Well, you see, the regular Ice Kacang is one purplish nut.... well, not literally. But well, there's more purple syrup used to give a certain sweetness to it. Somehow, it's more like a sour Sarsi kind of sweet. I don't really like it. Sue me. Hence, I ordered one which suited my taste. Here at the New World Park Ice Kacang Stall, you get to add many things, like fruits and even ice cream. Well, most stalls have that. But anyhow, just telling those who haven't tasted Ice Kacang a bit of a sneak peak on how nice this dessert is.

I ordered Ice Kacang with Banana as well as with extra Corn. Yeah, it actually tastes really good. Think of it as a sweet dessert with lots of ingredients on top of a ball of shaved ice. A must try if you come to Penang. After all, this is the famous Swatow Lane Ice Kacang which was moved inside a better facility or otherwise known as New World Park. Perfecto dessetizer! 8.2 out of 10!

And that's the end of Day 1. Sad outing eh?

Day 2! (Attempt 2)
Rawr! Now, sadly, I am all on my own, hunting for food to eat. Before I knew it, I kind of circled the entire town area. Couldn't really decide on what to eat. Yes yes, I know you all will shoot me for wasting petrol. Oh well, me and my indecisions. But thankfully, the Safe Lane has saved me again!

Behold..........

Tadaa! Heng Huat Cafe!!!! Home of...... Hmm, hold on, a picture speaks a thousand words right? In this case, I'll let it speak three words since I am stingy =P

Char Koay Teow! Why thank you, picture! Ah, yesh! Success! After two attempts, I have finally succeeded in hunting for probably the most famous Fried Koay Teow! Yesh! *victory dance*

Ah, as you can see, the prices are pretty crazy. The cheapest is 6 dollars.... which is double the normal price of the regular Char Koay Teow. Well, why so? Observe!

Yarrr! Presenting, the Lorong Selamat Char Koay Teow! Yeah, this small plate = RM6.50. Expensive hah? Well, it is quite good. Maybe not really worth that. From the way you see it, the only noticable feature is the "huge" prawns on the Koay Teow. Yep, those are quite common, relatively bigger than the usual ones used for Char Koay Teow though. For that, the price is doubled. Haha, amazing how people here are businessmen eh? But of course, it does have to meet its high standard and from my view, that Char Koay Teow did. Well, maybe it was the prawn. The Koay Teow was fried well, no doubt. But the things that stand out are the prawns. You know, it felt fresh cause if you actually tasted it, the meat is quite well... not too sure how to describe it, but certainly not overnight stuff for sure. Give it a 7.8 out of 10! :D

Another closer look at the mighty prawns! xP

Ah, last but not least, the drink. Well, I don't know why I am actually talking about it but well, it was chrysanthemum tea. I ordered Herbal Tea though. Oh well. It isn't special. It isn't unique. IT IS JUST TEA................................ which costs RM1.60 >.>..... Yeah, amazing hah. I should've just ordered Orange Juice. Then again, it might cost 5 bugs? Rated... 5 out of 10! *evilfaceafterrevenge*

After finishing my "gold" tea, it's time to let this Lorong Selamat expedition come to an end. Home!

____________________________________________________________________

Haha, disappointing conclusion, ain't it? Well, maybe so. Even though my blogging is quite well, inhaling profusely, I guess the whole experience was great. Not to mention the nice food. Haha.... Till the next time!

..Yummy.. ain't that all satisfying... XD

Songsssssssssssssssss

Birthday just passed few days ago. Was a great one to say the least. Yep. I had a spanking day thanks to all of you! Thanks to all who wished me Happy Birthday =D. Haha, will post up pictures soon. Haha

Hmm... as you all might have noticed, I have recently been blank on the Music Jukebox section I am supposed to update daily except Saturday. Somehow, I ran out of inspiration to continue. Well, maybe my music interest is diminishing? Well not really, it's still driving my day around. Haha, just not able to type in lots of reviews nowadays I guess. Been kind of busy with errands and stuff.

No matter, though, here's some of the music I have a crush on right now. Observe!

Yesh, the whole album. Looping it all the time. Awesome eh? Kind of in love with the Remember album in particular. Though, still looping my daily dose of Haru Haru. It's like drugs I guess XD.

Here's a sample of the music I am seriously stuck with......*this is just the intro of the album*

Big Bang - Everybody Scream

Love the suits. Haha. I just love the beat and the whole sequencing thing. Very very nice.... for me that is =D. Such a nice intro to a phenomenal album! Don't see that in regular albums, do ya? =P Hmm, apologize for the oversized Youtube embed though.

____________________________________________________________________

Of course, it's not just Big Bang driving me nuts at this point. As some of you might know, I have recently immersed myself into............ S-H-O-J-O!

Seriously, I do not know where the interest came from. Maybe it's the Korean influence. But upon just knowing Kim Hyun Joong of SS501 acting in Boys Over Flowers, a Korean version of Hana Yori Dango, I just decided to watch an episode of it. And somehow, my head got stuck with it. Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!

Or maybe it's the O.S.T. Well, you can say that as well since I'm pretty much hooked with a few songs in the soundtrack.

SS501 - Because I'm Stupid

SHINee - Stand By Me

SS501 - Making A Lover

They are pretty good songs. I kind of like the fact that this drama is a happier one than the other dramas I've seen before. The songs are pretty cheerful and refreshing too except for a few. All in all, just a great show!

____________________________________________________________________

Finally, the end of the list on my song addiction.

Lady GaGa - Poker Face

Haha, don't ask me why XD........

Of Roast Pork and Noodles

Eat eat eat~! My current motto? Well, not really. Anyhow, been trying to make most of my meals special and unique ones instead of the usual stuff. Mainly lunch I guess. Guess what? Actually found some good spots to eat recently. One, being more of a duck rice kind of shop while another selling "board mee". Cool!

First outing was with Soony, Shandy, KS and Yon Hon to a shop at Chulia Street. It is not exactly a coffee shop but actually an old hotel sort of thing where the hotel is like gone now. So now, what do they do? DUCK RICE! Yeah. I'm serious. You have one famous duckrice/charsiew/roastedpork stall out there serving the hotel shop downstairs, along with the drink shop of course. Well, it starts at around 11.30a.m. and by 11.45, the shop is usually full and you would have to wait for seats! Ask Soony and he'll tell you everything =D So, we ordered a Char Siew & Siew Bak rice each and it comes with little veges as well. For RM3.50! Quite reasonable.

My plate of Char Siew & Siew Bak rice! Delicious!

Well, I actually had two plates of this. Actually, you could just order a plate in the middle filled with Roasted Pork, Char Siew as well as their special Chinese sausage thing *called Su Qiong* and share the whole plate. Then, order soup and a plate of veges as well. Pretty worth it. A lot of people come here for lunch, especially the working class. The shop is always full and this happens almost every day of the week. Cool, right?

The best part of it is actually the Char Siew, being the main attraction of the customers. It's somewhat of a different class from the others. Well, you might say it's not like some grand dish of some extremely prestigious restaurant, but among hawker stalls, this is actually very good. It's actually quite juicy on the oily parts and the meat is also quite soft. The Roasted Pork aka Siew Bak is just so so but it's a great side dish. I would recommend the Su Qiong instead of the duck as I doubt the duck is nice. The special sausage is different from the average Chinese sausage *Lap Qiong*, maybe like the Taiwanese sausage but softer? Ahha! Anyhow, I rate it 8 out of 10 as I'm a meat lover XD. Great meal any time of any day. One of the gems of Penang I suppose =P

Nutmeg!

Ah, my father actually told me that they sold this and asked me to try. Quite rare in Penang. Nutmeg plus the little sour plum inside. Pretty nice drink. Though it might be kind of sour/sweet, depending on your taste. Just right for me.

Then, today I went for this "board mee" (Pan Mee) opposite Chung Hwa after finding out about it from a Penang food blog this morning. Hence, I decided to go to the place after a few friends had some stuff to do =P. Guess what? It turned out great.

Yeah, you got it. Island PRK Restaurant! Haha, well, I guess they need maintainence. But it's right opposite Chung Hwa High School. Lots of students go there after lunch along with residents and others. Quite a lot of people just now. Well, there were supposedly a few others which are nice and quite popular. But I wanted to try different. So..........

Introducing..... Pan Mee!

Hooray! Decent meal I had *nods*. It's sort of like Koay Teow Th'ng but the homemade one is a bit sticky I guess. They had the Maggi mee type they made but I decided to take this. XD It's a bit harder than Koay Teow that's for sure. Maybe more taste than Koay Teow Th'ng? Ikan bilis, veges, minced meat along with some mushrooms. Well, there was soy sauce for extra flavor but I don't really take those hot green chilli. Ah, nothing but a decent meal. Oh, and along with that, comes my Winter Melon juice! *homemade* Pretty good. *loves sweet stuff* Ah well, another decent meal certainly worth its total of RM3.50! Budget lunches for the win! =D Oh. And I rate it 7 out of 10! Good choice if you want something soupy or a little normal, not too wild meal!

Yay! My first posts about food! Okay, I feel hungry now. *runs for more*

Rejection and the Opposite

Haha. Congratulations to all of you who got the offers you dreamed of in the past week's U.S. university admission decisions! Particularly to Wiz on his UPenn offer! Yippee!! I have a friend in Ivy now! LOL.....

As for me, deep sighness. All rejection letters are bound for my home address. AHH!!!!!! Oh well, guess that's too bad hah? But it was quite an experience. At least it was from there that I discovered what I truly wanted to do in the future. Not bad hah? Besides, it wasn't all too bad. From that hectic period, I actually learned how to self praise in an essay. LOL. Aside from that, I got my Michigan offer too! Woohoo! And Michigan is supposedly a top 20 university in the WORLD. Not bad right? I'm happy that a university like that would want me in their class of 2013. Thank you!

Well, it's sad to say that if I do not have the right financial aid package, there's still no way that I'm going there. That is the case for UMich, sadly. However, hopefully there is a chance for me to obtain a better financial aid package when I submit tax returns. *prays* Aside from that, I also recently discovered that I am now admitted into the University of Toronto! Cool! Now I have another offer from one of the top universities in Canada! Hahahahaha!!!!

Anyhow, not going to boast. After all, I got rejetced by 9 universities. That's bad enough. Anyhow, I'll most probably be heading to Adelaide this July! =D

Well, aside from that, I guess DotA is getting somewhat boring... After all, 6.60 is not yet out. So why not try a little, as Wei Yang calls it, teamwork game. He claims Malaysians lack teamwork. LET'S PROVE HIM WRONG. Behold!!!! Custom Castle Defense!

Basically, you camp and defend then when you are strong enough, you go kill the enemy. Just a little snapshot from the game. I find it very cool..

Flying Orbs of Doom! Try to spot us both! Wait, oh my... What the hell are we doing there together =X

Look at how long we took! D:

All in all, it was a nice game where 4 others left =P. Something we're addicted to.

Just a status update. Haha. There goes my dream. The Princeton Undergraduate Dream. Too bad. I'll just have to find another way there. =D Anyway, for now, Aw-Seee??? You-S???? Can-a-ther? It's dilemma time!!! Help!!!! Ahhh

Rap is just AWESOME!

Here's a video I'd like to share. Discovered it today. Really a good advertisement for KPop rap. Wonderful!

YARRR!!!!

Artists : Eun Ji Won, Epik High, Brown Eyed Girls, Dynamic Duo, Big Bang (G-Dragon & T.O.P).

Haha, I even lined them up according to the video. I really like the freestyle end. Ahh!!!!!! Perhaps the singing from Ga In wasn't exactly perfect, but still, the rest was da bomb! Even the audience of stars enjoyed it! *notes TaeYang and Jong Hyun from SHINee*

Addicted again. Help!!!............ X3 <3 X3.

The San Diego Hoax

This came out on the Yahoo! front page. Apparently, it happened to me as well. April Fools' joke of the year?

Oops! UCSD Sends Acceptance E-mail to Wrong List

University Fails Basic Math, Gives Rejectees Hope

By ERIC S. PAGE

UC San Diego -- a school for the smart ones, supposedly -- mistakenly congratulated nearly 29,000 applicants on their acceptance, according to university officials.

Earlier this month, about 17,000 students were offered admission for the fall, leaving nearly 29,000 hopefuls out in the cold.

But on Tuesday, the school's communications office said an e-mail was sent Monday afternoon to all 46,377 students who applied for admission -- including the 29,000 rejects -- welcoming them to the campus.

A half-hour later, school officials said, they realized their mistake. Almost two hours after the first note went out, a second e-mail was sent, apologizing to 28,889 freshmen applicants for the mistake.

"No member of this department is more acutely aware of the emotional roller-coaster that this could cause for our applicants," Assistant Vice Chancellor Mae Brown.

An anonymous parent told the Los Angeles Times it was a "colossal screw-up."

Similar incidents have happened at other schools -- including Cornell in the recent past, the paper reported -- but the UCSD incident was the biggest "screw-up."

Aha! Guess what? Check out my email!

Haha, check out the first email!
Click for a larger image! Yay!!! I was on top of the world when this happened. Until....

Dear Jia,

Within the last two hours, you received an email addressed to students who had been admitted to UC San Diego.

As you have quickly realized, this communication was sent to you in error.

On behalf of the Office of Admissions and Relations with Schools, we deeply regret this mistake, because we understand the level of distress it has caused for many of you. In all humility, I ask that you please accept my apologies and those of the University of California, San Diego... and know that we continue to wish you success in your educational pursuits.

Sincerely,

Mae W. Brown
Assistant Vice Chancellor and Director of Admissions
When the hell did I realize that it was a communication error 0_0. Ahhhhh. April Fools gone bad =(. Well, maybe next time they should do it during April Fools and not before.

As Mr. Soony would put it,

NOOB!
